All You Need to Know About Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that can be found in food and water as well as in toothpastes and mouthwashes. As you go throughout your day, the minerals are added to and lost from your teeth through demineralization and remineralization. However, if you have more demineralization than remineralization, the bacteria in your mouth have a chance to begin the process of tooth decay, which is why fluoride is very important.

Fluoride is available in many forms, like tap water, fluoride mouth rinse, fluoride toothpaste, fluoride gummies, fluoride tablets, and fluoride dental treatments. When you receive a fluoride treatment at the dental office, it will come in the form of a foam, gel, or varnish. This treatment contains a large amount of fluoride and it often comes in different flavors. The fluoride foam is put into a mouth guard and inserted into your mouth. You will wait for a few minutes to allow the minerals to soak into your teeth. Varnish treatments are painted onto your teeth, and gel treatments can be painted on your teeth or presented in a mouth guard.

It is very important for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years old to consume the proper amount of fluoride. This is because the permanent teeth need to be nourished and strengthened when they are below the gums and once they grow into place. Fluoride is also very beneficial for adults because it helps fight tooth decay.
