Warning Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease, or periodontitis, is a very serious medical condition affecting millions of Americans every year. Sadly, it’s also incredibly preventable, even if you’re genetically predisposed to contracting gum disease.

So in an effort to help stem the tide of gum disease, we want to take a few minutes and share some of the warning signs of periodontitis with you.

Red/swollen gums

The first signs of gum disease are actually caused by gingivitis, which itself is a very mild form of gum disease. These two symptoms are usually accompanied by gums that bleed easily as well.

Gingivitis is caused by the collection of bacteria near or below the gum line. It’s caused by plaque and tartar buildup, which underscores the importance of regular dental visits. If left untreated, gingivitis causes full-blown periodontitis.

Loose teeth

If you’re an adult experiencing loose teeth, it may be a sign of gum disease.

Receding gums

Another sign of gum disease comes in the form of receding gums. If you’re noticing that your teeth appear to be longer, then that’s likely a sign your gums are receding and you need periodontal treatment.

If left unwatched, gum disease can cause tooth loss and sever pain, as well as incur high dental bills if you undergo any sort of cosmetic dentistry reconstruction. Here at Virginia Dental Group we can help you fight your gum disease, or prevent you from contracting it. Contact us today for more details.
